As society is rapidly changing due to technological development, there is a growing consensus that elementary schools should teach digital production tools. Accordingly, in Korea, maker education has begun to be introduced into the field with the goal of fostering convergence talents with the ability to utilize digital production tools.
Program development and various researches for maker education are being conducted, but research on effective maker education is lacking. In addition, there is a lack of instructional design models for maker education programs, making it difficult to develop efficient education programs.
The purpose of maker education is constructivism, in which learners construct meaningful knowledge and production skills by using production tools themselves. Accordingly, efforts are being made to apply physical computing tools to be used in the field as one of the methods for efficient maker education in the elementary school field. However, in schools, physical computing tools and programming language function-oriented forms and teacher-centered classes are often conducted. This is because there is a lack of class programs in which teachers can support learners' learning activities. Therefore, this study aims to create a class program that can be practically used in maker classes using physical computing tools in elementary schools.
Accordingly, in this study, the degree of improvement in computational thinking ability was measured by creating a program that applied the instructional design model of the maker education program using physical computing tools for education. The Maker instructional design model, which has been studied in advance, was analyzed by reference, and a program applying the instructional design model of the maker education program using physical computing tools for education for elementary school students was developed. In addition, the 12th class of the maker education program using physical computing tools for education was developed according to the stage of the developed instructional design model. The effectiveness of the integrated research method was verified by applying it to upper elementary school students.
The program consisted of ‘the process before making, the process during making, and the process after making’. In the entire process of making, empathy, observation of surroundings, and discovery of real-life problems were conducted. In the process phase of making, identifying material and tool characteristics, defining making problems, assembling computational artifacts, designing and coding algorithms using physical computing tools, creatively constructing computational artifacts, modifying, improving, and sharing algorithms and computational artifacts. Doing, reflecting, etc. were done. In the final stage of the process after making, synthesis, presenting the process of producing computing products, and holding a maker fair were held.
Utilization of Completed Educational Physical Computing Tools Maker Education Program The goal of the program is to ‘understand the principles and concepts of maker education and develop a creative convergence attitude through the making process ranging from programming to coding’. As a result of applying it to a class of 6th grade of elementary school, it was found that the computational thinking ability of students increased in the educational program developed by applying the maker education instructional design model. Also, the level of difficulty and interest of the program was appropriate for the level of 6th grade elementary school students.
This study is meaningful in that it proposed an instructional design model for maker education programs using physical computing tools for education and a maker education program using physical computing tools for education that can be applied to elementary schools. In the future, it is expected that an artificial intelligence program targeting elementary school students of various levels will be developed by applying the instructional design model of the maker education program using physical computing tools for education.
