Lidded bowls (盒) are designed to protect and store internal items with various tangible (有形的) personalities from the outside. They were also made in various types and forms according to the aspect of the times. From the practical everyday container to the special containers according to religion (宗敎) and ancestral ritual formalities (祭禮), the size and appearance vary according to the nature of the content, but the structural relations between the lid and the body are in line with one another.
Forms and formations of the lidded bowl in the Goryeo dynasty have developed in close correlation with the artifacts represented by metal, ceramics, wood lacquer, etc. of the same period. In general, external factors related to the inherent characteristics of the lidded bowl show a uniform pattern such as a stable proportion sense of the circular structure, a cohesive relationship of top and bottom configuration, and the presence of irregularities(凹凸) depending on the individual objects. However, the unique characteristics of each material depend on its features and natures.
In the case of lidded bowl in ceramics, processes such as molding (成形), refining (調整), carving patterns (施文), and burning vessels (燔造) are performed according to the nature of the soil. The lidded bowl of ceramics has a different formative beauty than other crafts. In particular, the celadon ware lidded bowl has escaped from the previous forms (形), colors (色), and single level of pattern technique. It forms a perfect aesthetic through a more technically sophisticated compound carving pattern (施文). Above all, the socio-cultural consciousness reflected in this process and the Oriental feelings and aesthetics inherent in it are able to grasp the chronological flow of the objects. In this respect, these feelings and aesthetics have a critical academic value.
However, current academic data or scholarship research results about the celadon lidded bowl are very minimal. The presence of objects (器物) can be identified through publications such as thesis and workbooks for the production of atrialproduct(試作品) of some arts and education graduate schools. However, most of them are fragmentary materials. In the case of the former, there is a limit to the multifaceted approach and review by the subsequent repetition of the previous research.
Therefore, the need for a basic or step-by-step approach is needed to understand the nature and meaning of the celadon lidded bowl. The purpose of this study is to establish the foundations after clarifying the nature of celadon lidded bowl in the Goryeo dynasty by paying attention to these actual states.
The lidded bowl, significantly used in human life due to its unique functionality and practicality, has been recognized for a long period of time, and a certain name change per time period has been detected according to its nature. Generally, it is understood that the mixture usage facts of 盒兒 & 盒子 centered on 合 - Silla Dynasty, 合子 - Goryeo Dynasty, 盒 - Joseon Dynasty is seized. On the basis of this, we can estimate the etymology of the nomenclature and its transition
The main use of the lidded bowl was to hold precious treasures such as golden flower in the Silla Dynasty and imperial gifts such as clove(丁香), medicine(藥), and tea(茶) in the Goryeo dynasty. In the Joseon Dynasty, as all items of everyday life were kept regardless of the nature and size of the goods, a broad perspective on the lidded bowl was required. As the overall history of the lidded bowl has been deep and traceable, various kinds of names and examples have been identified.
Under the Buddhist ideology, incense and tea were some of the examples examined through the existing literature, and appeared as necessities in various rituals. The spread of the cremation and makeup (火葬 · 化粧) cultures along with the drug (藥), which is a complex property of the two goods, provided important implications for understanding the trending process of the lidded bowl. Based on this historical background, the lidded bowls, which enjoyed the honor of the Goryeo Dynasty, were actively produced and consumed as lifestyle tools and artworks, not only practical but also technical and artistic.
Among the celadon lidded bowls, a small lidded bowl with the most colorful aesthetic of the Goryeo people was targeted. The characteristics and traits of the objects were analyzed through the present state of the area of production and consumer spots from the early 12th century to 14th century. As a result, the overall flow of the celadon lidded bowl was derived in three phases. The first period is from the late 10th century to the early 12th century when the ceramic industry was started on the Korean Peninsula. At this time, a period of an early celadon lidded bowl with a diameter of 20 cm and a height of over 15 cm was formed. On the flat top, a semicircular one-step curved line, a two-step oblique line type's lidded bowl cover, and a wide bowl type of lidded bowl body were identified as main aspects. Particularly, in the Yongin kiln site, where the vertical and horizontal relation of the stratum is clear, the Ⅲ floor and the District D in Gangjin Samcheung-ri showed the transitional phase. In other words, celadon lidded bowls made of medium and small diameters of 15cm (lid) and 9cm (body) appeared and gave an important view to the logical development of this paper.
Based on this, in the late 10th century when early Tea Bowls with Haemuri-Gup were being produced, the big lidded bowl was the main aspect. In the mid-twelfth century when Tea Bowls with Haemuri-Gup became extinct, a middle-sized lidded bowl emerged, resulting in the differentiation of objects according to their size.
The second period is the period when the small lidded bowl that had appeared at the beginning and middle of the 12th century passed through the structural formative period for the constant form in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and started its full development. Several types of derivations came along with a series of formal frameworks. Starting from the most basic type A, there are seven new types, from B(縱形) · C(菊花形) · D(圓筒形) · E(盞形) · F(箱子形) · G(母子形). These were newly produced, and the object was variously expanded.
In the case of type A, it is the representative aspect that has survived the longest period from the formation of the celadon lidded bowl to the decaying 14th century. Regardless of the seasonal trends, or not being synchronized with the fashion of the time, it was adopted as the most common molding during the whole period. On the other hand, each of the types from B to G formed a unique aesthetic and constructed various aspects of the celadon lidded bowl. This was confirmed only in Gangjin and Buan which played a pivotal role in the production and development of Goryeo Ceramics, and in Sadang-ri and Yucheon-ri, which produced high quality celadon products. These types developed intensively from the late 12th century to the 13th century in conjunction with the central ceramics period of the kiln. This context, much like this second period, provided the basis for setting the period for the celadon lidded bowl at that time.
On the contrary, the patterns of the seven types of celadon lidded bowls were observed as showing the developed aspects and changes according to the spatial division and expansion of the “first to third periods” regardless of the production type or carving patterns techniques. Overall, from the late 12th century to the first half of the 13th century, the first (inner area + external area), the second (inner area + external area·inclined plane + side area) form of the early and middle term coexisted. Since then, there has been an emphasis on the structural tertiary form (inner + middle + external areas · inclined plane + side area) which has emerged in priority. At this time, it was produced in the middle of the Goryeo dynasty as the most common method of carving patterns.
The third period, that of the celadon lidded bowl of the 14th century, showed that the colorful types of the previous period did not appear or had stagnated and declined. Types D to G were found to have some of the basic type A that survived. Overall, no major changes were found in terms of malformation. However, in the style and expression of the pattern, the second period of the tertiary style embodies excessive decoration and dense patterns. These created a complex pattern in which the edges of the existing sub-boundaries were obscured, and the regions of the middle and external areas of the upper face were expanded and fixed to the center area.
However, in case of Type G, it is suggested that it is an important clue in deducing the timing of the celadon lidded bowl. The appearance of artifacts transferred from the inlaid celadon to the Buncheong Ware during the Goryeo dynasty proved that the celadon lidded bowl gradually declined from the middle of the 15th century. From the first period to the third period, the overall aspect of celadon lidded bowl could be understood as the same flow as Goryeo ceramic's transition process.
This paper is significant in that it looks beyond the microscopic or fragmentary approach of the previous celadon lidded bowl to the macroscopic view. In addition, it is expected that not only the celadon lidded bowl's awareness will be expanded, but also the historical value for establishing a basis for deducing the multifaceted aspects and the influence relation of the entire celadon ceramics history.
