The foundations of Support Vector Machines (SVM) have been developed by Vapnik, /and SVM is gaining popularity due to many attractive features /and promising empirical performance. /The formulation embodies the Structural Risk Minimization (SRM) principle, /as opposed to the Empirical Risk Minimization (ERM) approach commonly employed /within statistical learning methods. /SRM minimizes an upper bound of the generalization error, as opposed to ERM which /minmizes the error of the training data. /It is this difference which equips SVMs with a greater potential to generalize, /which is our goal in statistical learning. /The SVM can be applied to both classification and regression problems. Training a statistical learning machine from examples is accomplished by minimizing /a quantitative error measure, the training error defined over a training set. /A low classification error on the training set does not, however, guarantee a low /expected error on any future example presented to the statistical learning machine, /that is, a low generalization error. The main goal of the dissertation is to merge theory and practice, proposing a new method. /The maximal margin classifier procedure is valid for linearly separable data, /that is, for training data sets without overlapping. /Such problems are rare in practice. /For overlapping, some data points cannot be correctly classified, and for any misclassified /training data point, this particular data point attempts to exert a stronger influence on /the decision boundary in order to be classified correctly. To find a classifier with a maximal margin, this algorithm must be changed, /allowing some data to be misclassified, or on the 'wrong' side of a decision boundary. The width of a soft margin can be controlled by a corresponding penalty parameter that /determines the trade-off between the training error and the Vapnik Chervonenkis dimension /of the model. The optimal margin algorithm is generalized by Cortes and Vapnik /to
