This study aims to clarify how the growth and development of traditional folk paintings (Minhwa) in the Joseon Dynasty influenced the formation of our nation's culture, and how modern artists inherited folk paintings.to newly transform them into an art work. Based on the examination, this study is intended to suggest the direction of development of Korean folk paintings of the 21st century.
Minhwa is a painting of the people that embody the diverse emotions of commoners during the Joseon Dynasty such as joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure, as well as human life phases such as birth, aging, disease and death, in addition to hope, and faith. In sum, it is a style of painting that accurately expresses emotions, spirits and wits of our nation.
Minhwa in our country has been maintaining its existence since ancient times, and in the late Joseon Dynasty, it made a rapid growth due to the economic progress of the people and the rise of social status. Thus, a number of works still remain to date. However, during the Japanese occupation, Minhwa underwent a noticeable decline due to the policy of eradication of national culture. As the spirit of restoring traditional culture was spreading throughout society during the course of the National Study (Gukhak) Movement or Gukhak Movement, which is a movement to recover our intrinsic national spirit occurred in the 1970s, the re-evaluation of Minhwa was made leading to its drastic rise in demand and supply.
Minhwa can be considered an artistic folk painting of the Joseon Dynasty. In the late Joseon Dynasty, it was particularly popular as a painting depicting commoners. In Ojuyeonmunjangjeonsango of Lee Gyugyeong, Minhwa was referred to as “Sokhwa,” which was used to decorate the home interior design of the common people with folding screens, scrolls, and wall hangings. Minhwa has a symbolic connotation of longing for good fortune, codes of conduct and fertility wished by the common people. To be specific, Minhwa is strongly based on strong wishes, and it carries an iconographic symbol system of a country. Therefore, the stories that appear in Minhwa are not only the old myths and tales of our nation, but also the hopes aspired by the inner psychology of the people. When it comes to the traditional Minhwa production method, its way of reproduction is being criticized. However, it has great advantages in that it is easy for the common people to apply it to daily life and anyone with a talent for art, and not necessarily an expert in art, can participate in Minhwa production only with a short period of training.
Nevertheless, the recent tendency to reflect the new aesthetic needs and the emotion-oriented life of modern people through traditional Minhwa brings about the movement to transform it into a modern format by appropriating, reinterpreting, and recreating the formative characteristics of the folk painting. From the point of view of what Benjamin Franklin states, “Tradition has the right to live and move in the present in an incessant manner, and it has the power to save the wishes required to us,” the new hope toward Minhwa is assumed to be a due wish.
This study explored the production method, formative, symbolic, and aesthetic characteristics of our traditional Minhwa and reviewed the achievement of artists who had influenced new artists by appropriating the traditional Minhwa works to recreate them as a new type of works during the process ranging from the late Joseon Dynasty to the present. On the other hand, this study inquired into the cultural functions of the paintings of flowers and birds in the 17th and 18th centuries as well as the current status of collections and the cultural functions of the four representative museums out of 55 in our country that actively exhibit and promote Minhwa at home and abroad.
The results of this study prove that traditional Minhwa excels in the aesthetic awareness and aesthetic sense of our nation. In particular, it was confirmed that there are a large number of works that highlight the chromatic features while juxtaposing the contrast between intense primary colors and complementary colors based on the five cardinal colors on a single canvas. Regarding the materials used for Minhwa, it counted on the paint used for dancheong, the traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden buildings, and artificial stone powder paint and Chinese paint. It is presumed that the intense appearance created based on the use of the characteristics of these materials will give a great influence on the development of modern Minhwa. Based on the tradition established by previous generations, it is judged that a variety of aesthetic senses and emotions perceived from traditional Minhwa must be developed into modern Minhwa that reflects even the national spirit imbued with it, rather than the mere transformation or appropriation of such elements in terms of appearance.
As a policy of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism that commenced from 1994 onwards, elementary, middle, and high schools began to officially teach Minhwa as a way of instructing old paintings of Korea. This contributed to popularization of Minhwa to some extent. During this period, re-evaluation of Minhwa was actively carried out, leading to a sudden increase of lovers of this genre. Novelty is based on tradition, but it also boldly creates something new by breaking the framework and restraints that are confined in tradition.
Today’s modern transformation of Minhwa should reflect the characteristics of today's era and formativeness from today's point of view, not from the Joseon Dynasty, the period when Minhwa was popular. The possibilities of Minhwa could be envisioned through the works of artists such as Park Saenggwang, Kim Kichang, Lee Jongsang, Hwang Changbae, Lee Waljong and Hong Inho, who appropriated Minhwa to transform it into a modern concept. Furthermore, it is expected that the projects in connection with Minhwa and active research related to the folk paintings conducted by Sosong Museum of Kyonggi University, Haengso Museum of Keimyung University, Joseon Minhwa Museum of Youngwol, and Mirine Icon Maoro Museum, which are organizations engaged in conservation of Minhwa will greatly contribute to developing Minhwa in the future.
