The functions of a rhythm in Korean traditional music designate the roles of the rhythm when a drummer accompanies a singer. Divided as Ki, Kyong, kyeol, and Hae, these functions accompany Sori (a type of Korean traditional songs) depending on the flow of the Sori. Therefore, examining which function of the rhythm is used on which part of the flow of the Sori is essential. Likewise, the examination will help an accompaniment to the Sori bring out the taste and feel of Korean traditional music.
Notwithstanding the Importance of rhythms and their functions depending on the flow of the Sori with actual accompaniment, studies made so far did not investigate the relationship between the fBow of the Sori and the functions of rhythms. In particular, the ways by which a drummer acknowledges the specific flow of the Sori and consequently decides on a particular function of the rhythm have yet to be studied. Moreover, the seventh cumculum for the elementary school system has many problems; each rhythm introduced on the textbook provides only general information on the standardized and irregular rhythmic forms without considering the flow of the Sori.
Hence, this research examined the functions of rhythms based on the flow of the Sori and studied old literature and scores of the finest drummers written by ear. The examined flow of the Sori was then applied back to the music.
By studying literature and scores written by ear and pigeonholing the outcome according to the functions of the rhythm, the flow of the Sori was examined and the following points observed:
1. Usually, Ki is used when the Sori is strongly expressed.
2. Kyong is accompanied when the Sori is expressed further by changing the details of the Sori, musical tension is escalated or relaxed through the addition of various melodies to the Sori, or the flow of the Sori is connected to Kyeol as the climax of the tension by tallying the articulated sound of Ki.
3. At the height of Kyong, i.e., the climax of the Sori tightening, Kyeol is accompanied when the Sori is ended with stress and the atmosphere of the music at its height.
4. Hae is accompanied when musical tension at its height and the tension
of Kyeol decrease.
The Soris flow of music on the textbook was examined according to the proposed principles and the characteristics of the functions posed by rhythms on a given song depending on each stage of the examination while applying each function of the rhythms. The following findings were discovered:
1. Ki is accompanied at the beginning of a song, since the part usually starts with stress in an attempt to highlight the song.
2. Kyeol or Kyeol and Hae are accompanied at the end of a song, sinte the part usually ends with it strong accent
3. Ki is accompanied at the beginning of a passage, since the part usually starts with stress.
4. Kyeol or Kyeol and Hae are accompanied at the end of a passage, since the part usually ends either strongly or with a gentle untying following the strong ending.
5. The flow of the Sori in the passage usually accompanies Kyong, since the flow connects Ki and kyeol or Kyeol and Hae.
6. Since the flow in the passage runs through various types and sorts, it is important to read the flow of the Sori and to consider the functions of the rhythms.
The thesis examined the functions of rhythms in the accompaniments of the Sori and considered its flow by studying old literature and scores of renowned drummers written by ear. The relationship between songs and functions of the rhythms was also analyzed.
Korean traditional music is based on the comprehensive musical flow.
Therefore, it Is important to acknowledge the flow of the Sori when it is accompanied by a Jango. Specifically, the most appropriate way of following the flow of traditional music involves understanding each function of the rhythm based on the flow of the Sori, acknowledging the characteristics of the functions, and accompanying the Sori accordingly.
