The Children's complete works are given a great deal of weight on the publishing industry in Korea. This is caused by great concern for education of Korean society. Of children's books, the Children's complete works have been given an important position in appeasement of parents' concern of children's education. Especially, After adopting the visit sales system just a few of the large publishing enterprises with enough capital, which can afford to administer an sales department, lead the publishing market.
In 1997 the IMF brought changes to the publishing environment of children's books. As the market continued to be decrease, consumption of children's complete works also decreased. On the other hand, as publishing companies focusing on children's books were increasing, competition in the publishing Industry became more keen and sharp. Therefore, quality of the children's complete works is different from what it used to be.
The subject of this paper is to analyse the quality of the children's complete works after IMF. First of all, it needs to define a range of children's complete works and the structure of children's complete works market. The range of children's complete works should be considered in theoretical discussion on child and complete works, and also in publishers' classification of books. The definition of children's complete works is books whose target are infants and elementary students, published in personal complete works, selected works and general complete works, being sold by the visit sales or the sole agency, and at book stores.
The market of children's complete works is an oligopoly market by a few large publishing enterprises. In a channel of distribution, books are sold by the visit sales system a lot more than they are done by the sole agency or at book stores.
The market of children's complete works had been changing after IMF. Primary factors that effected the children's complete works publishing business are divided into two sections. They are the external publishing environment causes and internal publishing environment causes.
First, there is the economic environment, the propensity to consume and the technical environment as the external publishing environment causes.
The economic environment causes are that market depression continued and the cost of production increased. After IMF, domestic publishing industry remained stagnant and the contract deposit for the right to translate rose rapidly and the price of raw materials, for example paper, also rose as the exchange rate was getting higher. As a result, book consumers decreased.
The propensity to consume is to be as a fixed purpose and benefit that consumers pursue is subdivided. The benefit that books offer should be clear and should be in accord with the purpose consumers pursue. The benefit the consumers pursue is various according to the economic environment, age and career.
The technical environment is about development of computer technology. Personal computers and broad band internet cables have spread since the mid 1990s, so that CD-ROMs and disk books were developed and served by the internet.
Second, internal publishing environment causes are competitions within children's books market and the internal changes in a publishing company of children's complete works.
The financial crisis decreased the whole publishing industry. On the other hand, children's books markets were more activate. Publishing companies focusing on non-children books started to focus on children's works. There were quantitative development and qualitative development in children's books as specific publishing companies only concerned on publishing projects of children's books established. As a result, the children's book market that was divided into two sections became one competitive market.
The publishing companies strengthened the way of market-oriented management and diversified business fields.
The children's complete works in new publishing environment after IMF have gotten new special qualities in usability, sales way and recognition degrees.
In the usability side, there are the diversification of study fields, the additional service of educational function, the subdivision of consumers' age, the diversification of books' elements and the connection with school study.
In the sales side, the condition of sales and the salesmanship became more flexible that it was before IMF.
To lighten a burden imposed on a consumer about the high price of the children's complete works after IMF, and to raise a practical usability of goods the publishing companies made the condition of sales and salesmanship more flexible. The flexible condition of sales is like a separation sale of a set or contents.
In the recognition degrees side, the publishing companies strengthen the company's own specialty and their goods specialty.
There was just premium to promote sales. Or making leaflets was all to promote sales. But, after the IMF the children's complete works publishing companies made an advertisement to improve the image of company or to advertise their goods. The image of company is focused on educational publishing. And some goods that its targets are for specific ages, are becoming independent brands, specially on infant works.
As stated above, the children's complete works after IMF shows new quality of goods. This kind of changes will be more raising in the direction of satisfying consumers' needs.
Hereafter to develop the children's complete works it is essential to import OSMP. OSMP stands for 'One Source Multi Product'. The children's complete works, which spend a huge amount of development costs, need a variety of usability in the very early stage of the publishing project. And also, books should be discriminative from other publishing company's books and production system should be changed into small quantity batch production. The life cycle of goods should be managed systematically and a channel of distribution also should be various.
