The sudden social isolation brought about by COVID-19 has reduced the opportunities for interpersonal communication for many individuals. The progressively larger market size of virtual friends in the modern age reflects this growing trend of loneliness and dissatisfaction with real interpersonal relationships with people. Humans now establish social relationships with AI companion chatbots, treating them as close friends or partners. Such intimate relationships with virtual characters in this medium are called “parasocial interactions”.
This study proposes a model to test whether the quality of parasocial interaction has a direct or indirect effect on loneliness when mediated by human-chatbot trust and media dependence. The study uses an online survey to investigate the quality of parasocial interactions with AI companion chatbots among 374 respondents. Their degree of loneliness, trust and their media dependence on the chatbot will also be investigated.
The results indicated that all the hypothesis are supported except hypothesis 3 that there is no statistically significant between human-chatbot trust and loneliness. Human-chatbot trust is not the mediator between parasocial interactions and loneliness, but instead, media dependence is. The results also suggest that because of the serial mediation effect of human-chatbot trust and dependency on media, it is hard to get rid of loneliness even if users parasocial interact with AI companion chatbots.
This study verified again the ‘deficiency paradigm’ of parasocial interaction and the negative effects of media dependence. It also suggests some practical implications in that the media cannot replace the satisfaction and effect of human interaction. Chatbots are intelligent enough but their reaction is just simply the result of data learning. Offline communication cannot be given up, and the people around us also need to be valued.
