This study endeavors to examine the long history and the process of construction of the Leifeng Tower which is near West Lake (西湖) in Hangzhou(杭州) and to explore its historical, literary, and cultural symbolism. The paper will also examine the significance of this edifice by investigating and analyzing the historical events, legendry, literature, and cultural value of the structure.
Leifeng Tower was built by the last emperor Qian Chu (錢俶) of Wuyue State (吳越國) in 977 CE. Since then, it has become famous for its surroundings known as the “Leifeng afterglow (雷峰夕照)”, a panorama that is one of the ten sights of the West Lake. Although Leifeng Tower was destroyed by war and by folk superstition, it has provided a variety of source material to numerous writers of a genre known as “Leifeng Tower literature.” Leifeng Tower is the place where, in the legend of the white snake, the tragic love story between a woman and a man reaches its climax. It is also known to be the tower where that white snake was imprisoned. The collapse of the tower has been interpreted in a multitude of ways by scholars and writers. Some of them treasure Leifeng Tower while others criticize it. Over the course of time, the tower has acquired multiple symbols and meanings even though its function and significance as a pagoda is no longer valid. The tower has combined history and religion and legend and superstition. Its image has been subverted constantly due to personal interpretation and literary creation. Nowadays, it has become a structure where lovers pray for the actualization of their affection into a happy ending. This new role of the tower is a dramatic reversal of its earlier image as a barrier to the love between Xu Xian and the white lady in the legend.
In the process of cultural reformation, the various symbolic meanings of Leifeng Tower have become not only extremely complex but also contradictory. The present study will analyze historical data, related legendry, literature, and cultural phenomena.
Previous studies with regard to Leifeng Tower have mostly focused on the legend of the white snake and the archaeological aspects of the pagoda. The present examination will, however, ensure a comprehensive analysis of Leifeng Tower using a range of means such as literary analysis, an investigation of image data, the study of archaeological records, and the undertaking of a field investigation. While previous research on the novel, The Fall of the Pagoda, written by Eileen Chang (張愛玲) and the article “On the Collapse of the Leifeng Tower” (論雷峰塔的倒掉) authored by Lu Xun (魯迅) dealt only with a single perspective about the structure, the current study will ensure an inclusive analysis by combining diverse ideas. This research project will begin with the history of the Leifeng Tower and explore the manner in which it was described, symbolized, extended, and recreated via an assortment of literary texts.
The beliefs that are accepted by modern young people with regard to the ancient structure are totally unrelated to the legend of the white snake, the pagoda of religious instruction, and the art work that acquired special symbolism and meaning over the centuries in the minds of people. It will be an interesting process to reconsider the remains of an edifice connected to Buddhism and to examine the new images that have been associated with it.
