The purpose of this study is to carry out a quantitative analysis of vocabulary in Korean and Japanese newspapers to examine how gender ideology is reproduced in mass media. For this purpose, the Chosun Ilbo, the Joongang Ilbo, and the Hankyoreh of Korea were selected and the Yomiuri Shimbun, the Mainichi Shimbun, and the Asahi Shimbun were chosen. From these newspapers, vocabulary related to nouns referring to human beings was selected and classified by gender from the society page for the period of 15 days (45 days in total for Korean and Japanese newspapers respectively) from January and to March 2016.
In the Korean newspapers, among 3,320 of types, masculine words were 1,479 (44.5%), feminine words were 552 (16.6%), and neuter words were 1,289 (38.8%); among 11,970 tokens, masculine words were 3,460 (28.9%), feminine words were 1,906 (15.9%), and neuter words were 6,604 (55.2%). In the Japanese newspapers, among 3,127 of types, masculine words were 1,696 (54.2%), feminine words were 585 (18.7%), and neuter words were 846 (27.1%); among 11,214 of tokens, masculine words were 4,965 (44.3%), feminine words were 1,810 (16.1%), and neuter words were 4,439 (39.6%).
According to ‘Bunruigoihyo’(1964), the vocabularies categorized by gender were classified according to the areas of meaning <1.20 Human>, <1.21 Family>, <1.22 Colleague>, <1.23 Person>, and <1.24 Member>. The result shows that in both Korean and Japanese newspapers, masculine vocabulary was concentrated in <1.24 Member> and feminine vocabulary was distributed evenly compared to masculine vocabulary, and there were relatively many words related to <1.21 Family>. The usage patterns of the vocabulary for different items can be summarized as follows.
<1.20 Human>: Both Korean and Japanese newspapers tended to refer to women as words that indicated the gender of woman. Korean newspapers frequently used the personal pronouns for both men and women compared to Japanese newspapers, while Japanese newspapers used ‘man’ and ‘woman’ as personal pronouns.
<1.21 Family>: In Korean newspapers, man tended to appear as a representative of a couple. In Japanese newspapers, percentage of words referring to ‘wife’ was higher than words referring to ‘husband’ compared to Korean newspapers.
<1.22 Colleague>: In Korean newspapers, men were appearing as customers, and women as owners of bars and restaurants. In the Japanese newspapers, there was no distinct feature on this item.
<1.23 Person>: When the personal noun was divided into name and honorific title, there was no significant difference between male and female in Korean newspapers.
In Japanese newspapers, the use of ‘surname’ and ‘si (氏)’ for male and the use of ‘given name’ and ‘san (さん)’ were frequent, which shows a difference in the use of names and honorific titles.
<1.24 Member>: In the Korean newspapers, men tended to appear as managers, women as services and sales workers; men as offenders, and women as victims. In the Japanese newspapers, men tended to appear as managers, which is similar to Korean newspapers. However, in the case of women, it was difficult to find distinctive features.
The following gender characteristics were drawn from the use of vocabulary discussed above.
First, vocabulary in newspapers were classified by gender and compared. In Korean newspapers, masculine words 2.7 times the feminine words in the number of types, 1.8 times in tokens. In Japanese newspapers, masculine words 2.9 times the feminine words in the number of types, 2.7 times in tokens. This result shows that all Korean and Japanese newspapers discussed in this paper mainly consist of male figures.
Second, from the perspective that sees man as the standard of human beings two types of expression appeared: one is the expression that regards woman as a special being and indicates and emphasizes she is female; the other is the expression that modifies woman in relation to man to show that woman is someone who is dependent on man.
Third, in the newspapers of the two countries, gender images of man and woman were represented differently. Typically, man appeared in the image of a social member and woman as a family member. Man was characterized by ruler, representative, offender while woman was characterized as someone subject to ruler and victim.
To sum up, this paper examined gender characteristics of vocabulary in the Korean and Japanese newspapers. The result shows that all the newspapers of Korea and Japan examined in this study are male-centered, and stereotyped gender ideologies are in operation such as ‘man is for society, woman is for family’.
It can be acknowledged that the scope of the subjects for this study is narrow and the perspective of analysis may be somewhat biased. However, the significance of this study can be found in that it examines gender characteristics through quantitative analysis by means of semantics centered on gender related vocabulary.
