The study of Sanctification has been going on many parts of theology. Historically, Church has been concerned with the righteous and holy life, many theologians have indicated theories of sanctification. In spite of agreement of holy and righteous life, there are many theories on sanctification in Christianity which based on each theological positions. These many theories obstruct the obvious understanding of sanctification and give rise to confusion on the life of sanctification.
This thesis will ascertain that the different views of sanctification is based on the understanding of man as "image of God"(imago Dei). Although man was created in the image of God, he lost it by committing the Sin. The view of sanctification become different from understanding of man as "image of God" in Creation, Depravity, and Salvation. Therefore this dissertation will study how does the understanding of man as "image of God" act on the goal and method of sanctification in each theological position.
First, the sanctification of Roman Catholic Church is on the understanding of man influenced by Hellenistic philosophy. This view understand man as not the sinner but the natural man. The natural man is not effected on original sin. According to hellenistic philosophy, the sanctification of the natural man is goal to be God.(deification) He can participate in the Essence by means of supernatural grace. The sanctification can be increased by grace infused supernaturally and good conduct. This supernatural grace called "additional grace"(donum superadditum) is given through the sacraments and self-discipline method. Roman Catholic Church has gone away from biblical understanding of man because of hellenistic philosophy, therefore, it has determined the goal and method of sanctification in such a way.
John Wesley's theological point of view on the sanctification is synergistic. Although it is not Pelagian synergism rejecting original Sin, it has theological features emphasized on the man's free will and ability. This view based on the Wesley's positive understanding of man. He changed the doctrine of man. He insisted that man has three essential elements; Understanding(reason), Will, Free. Wesley put concept of Free into the man's essential element. The concept of Free is very important to his theology. Free(Liberty) is a power of directing one's own affections and actions; a capacity of determining oneself or of choosing good and evil. In this modification, he stress that man is the responsible being has liberty and capacity. Wesley released man from guilty of original sin by means of "preceding grace" which is universal grace(There is no one excluding this grace) and recovers reason and will. Man can choice good and evil, has an ability to the salvation. Therefore salvation is not only God's work. Man plays important role in salvation. Specially, Wesley told "the perfect sanctification" in this life. The positive understanding of man caused him to use positive term namely "perfect sanctification in this life".
Sanctification of Calvin and Reformed theology emphasizes that sanctification is the union with Jesus Christ. Man is sanctified by union with Christ. The sanctification through the union of Christ has two aspect. The one is mortification of sin and the other is vivification. Mortification occurs in the union of Christ's death, and vivification occurs in Christ's resurrection. This view is resulted from the Calvin's view that man is the being created in image of God, deprived of image of God by sin, and regained it through the union of Christ. Calvin's emphasis on Scripture, prayer, and the third use of Law has it roots in this cognition of man.
Finally, this thesis argue that the image of God is personality. God reveals oneself in way of not divine-substance(substantia) but personality(persona). Father of the Church comprehended the personality as embodiment of substance. Therefore, the sanctification of believer has to be understood as a change and recover of personality through the union with Christ. It will overcome the extreme view of sanctification like antinomianism, moral self discipline, and seeking only the grace which experienced through the special event.
