The study aimed to empirically test how consumers respond to a sustainable message (e.g., logo) visible on luxury fashion products. With a further interest in the role of guilt, the study also investigated the mediation effect of guilt in selecting a sustainable product over a regular one. The study hypothesized that a sustainable logo would help mitigate guilt, and this would raise consumers’ preference for sustainable luxury products over their regular counterparts.
Recently sustainability has arisen as a global concern and a key imperative for corporate actions. Accordingly, the luxury fashion industry is also adopting sustainable manufacturing, such as using recycled materials, abandoning animal fur, and promoting less packaging. In tandem with this industrial change, consumers have exhibited high purchase intentions for luxury products produced in a socially and ecologically sustainable manner.
Based on prior research that luxury purchase entails not only pleasure but also guilt and that consumers try to alleviate guilt through prosocial behavior (e.g., choosing ethically produced luxury goods or using luxury goods for an extended period) to legitimize their purchase decisions, such recent sustainable luxury consumption trend can also be associated with consumers’ effort to reduce guilt. Just as sustainability appeal helps consumers address guilt and legitimize purchase decision, it also benefits luxury firms by helping to promote ethical brand image and legitimize sales activities. For this reason, luxury fashion brands are also devoted to seeking effective ways to market their sustainable business.
Design, among those effective ways, has recently been identified as a crucial factor for sustainable luxury green products to successfully make an entrance into the market. What still remains contradictory, however, is whether or not visible ethical appeals (e.g., logos signaling recycled materials or fake fur) are effective for the promotion of sustainable luxury. Prior research on the positive side argues that visible ethical appeals might help reduce luxury guilt, and thus will be well-marketed. Conversely, the negative side concerns that visible ethical appeals might impair consumers’ conventional expectations for extravagant and prestigious luxury image. It would, therefore, be meaningful to empirically test the effect of visible sustainability message (e.g., logos) of luxury goods on consumers’ product evaluation.
The study conducted a single-factor between-subjects experimental design through an online survey. A total of 104 Korean female participants in their thirties and forties with an experience of luxury purchases were recruited. During the survey, following having received information about the original Prada bag, subjects were randomly assigned to a different product advertisement (experiment condition: Prada bag made of recycled nylon with a visible re-nylon logo vs. control condition: Prada bag made of virgin nylon with original logo). Then, they were asked to evaluate the product (product attitude, purchase value, purchase intention, willingness-to-pay) and report their personal guilt level anticipated upon buying the Prada bag, along with the reason for such feelings. The data were analyzed using SPSS (ver. 24) for descriptive statistics and independent t-tests, and Hayes’ PROCESS Macro was conducted for mediation analysis.
The results were as follows. First, independent t-tests showed that the experimental group had slightly higher product attitude, purchase value, and purchase intention scores, and lower willingness-to-pay than the control group, but the differences were not statistically significant. However, when ethical apparel consumption tendency was considered as a covariate, a significant cross-interaction effect was observed for purchase value. The respondents with low ethical apparel consumption tendency perceived the value of regular(virgin) product with an original Prada logo higher than its sustainable counterpart. However, those with high ethical apparel consumption tendency perceived the value of sustainable products with a sustainable brand logo higher than their regular(virgin) counterparts. Hence, it can be concluded that although visible sustainable messages on products alone do not guide consumers’ preference for sustainable products, they can have a boosting effect for those who bear ethical consciousness.
Second, the subjects’ overall guilt level was not high (m=2.72, sd=0.80), and the major cause for such feeling was found to be financial burden. Other causes included regrets over compulsive buying, low wearing frequency, normative concerns over being ostentatious, quality concerns, and waste(environmental) concerns.
Third, the mediation analysis of guilt revealed no statistically significant mediation effect. Although not statistically significant, the directions of associations between the variables were in line with the hypothesis. A sustainable message had negative effect on guilt. Thus, it reduced guilt, resulting in more favorable product evaluations. The lack of significance of the results can be attributed to the discrepancy between the cause of consumer guilt (i.e., financial guilt) and the ethical quality of the product appeal (i.e., ecological contribution). Although the study expected that guilt could largely be treated through prosocial appeal, guilt is caused by multiple reasons, and the content of consumer guilt and that of sustainable products could matter for a compensation effect to occur.
Despite limitations, including small sample size and statistically non-significant data analysis results, the study might still have implications for academia and luxury brands. First, it empirically tested consumers’ responses to sustainable products with a sustainability logo. This study is meaningful in that it provides a specific and context-based causal explanation by conducting an experiment on sustainable product selection. In particular, this study considered both the consumer emotion variable (i.e., guilt) and the product characteristics variable (i.e., brand logo) in the experiment, which are known to be highly significant antecedents for consumers’ product choice. Using such a concrete experiment scenario, the study offers a realistic understanding of sustainable luxury purchase behavior. Second, to address the failure to validate mediating effect of guilt, it is suggested to hypothesize guilt as enduring trait emotion or habitual tendencies rather than as state emotion. Based on this new assumption, testing moderating effect of guilt in visible sustainability appeals’ association with consumers’ product evaluation will help clarify the role of guilt in sustainable luxury consumption behavior.
In addition to academic implications, this study also has managerial implications. First, considering that sustainable message product was valued higher than regular product among those with high ethical apparel consumption tendency, raising awareness of sustainable consumption might be important for the brands’ successful promotion of sustainable products. Second managerial implication might be that brands should have a meticulous understanding of consumers’ psychological motives for consumption. Identifying why guilt fails to mediate the sustainable product message and product selection, knowing when and why consumers feel certain feelings, and under what conditions these feelings can facilitate (or bother) the purchase of sustainable luxury products are thought to be crucial for successful brand strategies.
