The flower is deemed as a symbol of natural beauty in the gray city of this rapidly changing society. The images of flower in the seasonal flow show restless change and recur unerringly as well. Artists embody and shape flowers with various materials and forms because they recognize flowers as entity that coexists with human, not as subjects or objects.
Nature for men is not in the state of the background surrounding them or the object to be developed and exploited any longer. This is supported by social discussions on the importance of environment which is getting more emphasized as material civilization is developed further. Our wish to be near the flowers is closely related to human nostalgia in which they realize the importance of environment or nature and wish to return to it. Since they notice the importance of environment now but cannot go back to nature, men want to put a part of nature in their own space as material civilization is getting developed more and more. Thus, it is not an exaggeration that the comfort that flowers give us is the very thing that men want to attain from nature.
This study begins from considering the functionality and decorativity of industrial ceramics first and examines the general meaning and symbolism of flowers and the formativity of modern ceramic arts made with flowers as a theme. Based on this, it also focuses on the aesthetic value and formative possibility when flowers that change not as going against the flow of time in this dramatically changing modern life but do not lose their original nature become a theme. The paper also considers the way to add functionality there. It tries to put greater meaning on formativity in actually designing the work as putting off the discussion of which is superior between formativity and functionality. If the behavior of decorating a part of our reduced family environment formatively in this era of industrialized nuclear family can help to change our living space into more pleasant one to some extent, this article intends to figure out the very way to do so.
In the process of designing the work, the form of the flower itself was embodied, or the image of the flower was decorated onto sub-themes like the posy or tree. Thereby, the study attempted to express such things like the images and symbolism of flowers or our mind that can be expressed with flowers by various themes. It also tried to maximize decorativity and formativity in the works with functionality and add to formative works functionality that suits them.
This article chose as a designing method the slip casting that allows repetitive production and made various kinds of flowers and sub-themes accordingly. In particular, it varies the size of the flowers in order to enhance the senses of repetition and rhythm. For designing the shapes of flowers through repetitive expression, it tried a technique that decorated the shapes of the slip cast flowers on the utensils made by spinning.
The materials have excellent transmittency. Super white and Baekjato were used to make glaze more vivid, and the kinds of glaze used were traditional ones such as Cheongja, Baekja, Jinsa, and Cheonmok. And for glazing, both dipping and spraying were used.
For calcination, the first one was performed in a 0.7 m³-kiln at the closing temperature of 800°C for eight hours, and the second one was reductive calcination at the closing temperature of 1270 °C.
Through this study, the author realized that flowers bringing us repose and comport are ‘another portrait of us’, mirroring human mind. In the actual working process, the designer was able to find out her work could have its own color and widen its areas more variously when the general material of flowers was defined and expressed as a formative language of ‘memory’. The culture of industrial ceramics whose age is the same as the human history has been developed with various matters and materials, and its domain can include anything. However, even though certain work is carried out in similar circumstances using the same matters and materials, the writer thinks the artist should express his or her own original language in it and try to integrate the industrial art produced in that way with other fields.
