Postulating that the family to seize political hegemony in the Joseon Dynasty builds up the regional base by possessing the tombs and land near modern-day Seoul and in modern-day Gyeonggi-do Province, this paper examines the change in terms of the possession or expansion of the regional base in Gyeonggi-do Province from Bukin faction, Namin faction, Soron faction to Noron faction, through the political events such as the change of political hegemony from the meritorious elite(Hungu: 勳舊) to Neo-Confucian literati(Sarim; 士林) and enthronement of King Injo subsequent to dethronement of a predecessor king, Gapsul Hwanguk and enthronement of King Yeongjo caused by the factional politics.
From the premise, first, I look into the move of the tomb spots of a pivotal ancestor and other ancestors into Gyonggi-do Province and change of their stronghold in the families of Andong Kim, Gigye Yoo, Yeoheung Min and Gyeongju Kim in order to grasp the distribution of Noron families' tombs located in Gyeonggi-do Province. Second, the paper takes a look at the move of the regional base of Gwangsan Kim clan and Eunjin Song clan from initial strongholds to the Gyeonggi-do Province under the historical background of Gyeongsin Hwanguk and Gapsul Hwanguk in the late 17th century. Third, the paper examines the case of the loyal family that is among the meritorious elite at the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty, establishes the relationship with Seoin faction through the marriage and the relationship between master and disciple with the faction as the loyal family drifts apart from King family, integrates into Noron faction and maintains or expands the regional base or the tombs of the loyal family in the Gyeonggi-do Province. As described above, the paper looks into three types of Noron faction to advance to the Gyeonggi-do Province in the chapter 2, 3 and 4 respectively.
In chapter 2, the paper examines the distribution of Noron families' tombs located in the Gyeonggi-do Province. The first case, Andong Kim clan that live generation to generation inside the Gyeonggi-do Province from 16th century after moving from an initial stronghold and secures the stronghold in Seoul by taking up pubic offices generation to generation and become a meritorious retainer and then build their tombs in the Gyeonggi-do Province.
The second case, Gigye Yoo clan that go to their hometown in the early days of Joseon Dynasty and establish their tombs and stronghold in Goyang and Hwado, Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do Province as Neo-Confucian literati seizes the political hegemony. The third case, Yeoheung Min clan that go to their hometown, Daejeon, after King Sejo in the early days of Joseon Dynasty and build up their tombs and stronghold in Namyangju through Eulsa Sahwa. The fourth case, Gyeongju Kim clan that build up their tombs in the Gyeonggi-do Province in the early days of Joseon Dynasty, but go back to Seosan, act as the major family in the region and build up their tombs in Namyangju and Yeoju located in the Gyeonggi-do Province through emergence of Queen Jeongsun in power.
These clans play a pivotal role in enthronement of King Injo in the 17th century, lead the rejection of negotiations with Qing Dynasty in China after the Manchu war of 1636, are integrated into Seoin-Noron faction and are involved in the historical events such as Yeasong dispute, Gisa Hwanguk, Gapsul Hwanguk, Shinim Sawha and enthronement of King Yeongjo. During the events, the clans maintain their tombs situated in Gyeonggi-do Province constructed in the early days of Joseon Dynasty or construct the other tombs in other areas in the Gyeonggi-do Province. The clans like Andong Kim, Yeoheung Min and Gyeongju Kim lead political situation as a member of Noron faction, and make a close relationship with the king family through cultivating queen, becoming a father in law of a king or a son in law of a king, while the clans construct their tombs in the Gyeonggi-do Province. Gigye Yoo clan finally seize the political hegemony in the process of Shinim Sahwa occurred as part of power struggle between factions and build the tombs and secure the stronghold in Seoul. In addition, establishing the stronghold for generation to generation and their tombs in not only the Gyeonggi-do Province but the Chungcheong Province served as the hinterland for the advance to the political world of the capital.
In the chapter 3, I take a look at the type that the clans build the tombs in the Gyeonggi-do Province after Gapsul Hwanguk. Gwangsan Kim clan and Eunjin Song clan, the key families of Noron faction, advance to the Gyeonggi-do Province in the 17th century when Kim Jangsaeng and Song Siyeol hold the political hegemony of the dynasty. Gwangsan Kim clan case, Kim ban, Kim Ikhui and Kim Mangi, sons of Kim Jangsaeng receive public posts and actively lead the political situation. The daughter of Kim Mangi become Queen Ingyeong, Kim Mangi become a father in law of King Sukjong. Thus, the political influence enables the clan to construct the tombs in the Bukbang-myeon, Gwangju, modern-day Daeyami-dong, Gunpo-si. Eunjin Song clan case, the clan live for a long time in Hoedeok and Cheongju. As Song Siyeol seize power in the days of King Hyojong, the political clout enables the clan to build the tombs in Manui, Suwon, modern-day Dongtan. The common feature of the two clans is that as the big shots in the two families who reside for a long time in Chungcheong region are directly involved in the politics in the 17th century, the growing influence makes the clans to establish their tombs and strongholds in the Gyeonggi-do Province. It shows that the influential clan in the hometown becomes a major clan in the capital area since the 17th century owing to the seize of the political hegemony.
In the chapter 4, I explain the Lee Gyeongyeo's prince Milsung clan and Lee Huwon's prince Geangpyeong clan. The two clans are loyal families but are classified as the Seoin-Noron faction because of the relationship established by marriage and master and disciple. The two clans are a member of the loyal family as a prince. Thus the clans can foster their tombs in the vicinity of the capital called Hanyang such as Gwangju region, modern-day Choi-dong, Hanam-si, Hakdang-ri, modern-day Seolleung and Daemosan Mountain in Suseo. But, after several generations pass, the clans drift apart from the loyal family, integrated into the nobility and establish the relationship with Neo-Confucian literati by marriage and master and disciple. In addition, during the power struggle between factions of Neo-Confucian literati, the clans from the loyal family that belongs to Seoin-Noron faction receive the public posts and actively join in the political activities. Like other Noron clans, the clans can maintain their tombs and stronghold in the Gyeonggi-do Province and expand the tombs and stronghold to other Gyeonggi regions and Hose regions. The clans from the loyal family's establishment of the close relationship with major clans of Seoin-Noron faction by the marriage give the chance to join in Seoin-Noron faction to the clans initially of the loyal family.
The Noron families hold the political hegemony amid the factional politics and then go through the ups and downs in the process of Gabin Yeasong, Gisa Hwanguk and Shinim Sahwa. However, since King Yeongjo, Noron clans secures the political hegemony and become the major clans in the late of the Joseon Dynasty. Thus, Noron clans secure the areas for their tombs and stronghold in several regions of the Gyeonggi-do Province. I realized that Noron clans are not clans that possess the large land inside the Gyeonggi-do Province in the early Joseon Dynasty, but while experiencing the historical events such as the shift of power from the meritorious elite to Neo-Confucian literati and enthronement of King Injo subsequent to dethronement of a predecessor king, the rejection of negotiations and the expedition plan to conquer the Qing Dynasty after the Manchu war of 1636, Yeasong dispute and Gapsul Hwanguk, Shinim Sahwa and enthronement of King Yeongjo caused by the factional politics, Noron clans ultimately take political hegemony and expand the areas for their tombs and stronghold inside the Gyeonggi-do Province or newly advance to other Gyeonggi regions.
As the factional politics unfolds, the aspect in the regional base of each faction changes. The Yongnam region-based clans losing the political power since King Injo, strengthen the solidarity of the family, issue the genealogy and the collection of literary works and construct and run lecture halls in order to unite the members of the clan and band other clans together. Meanwhile, the Hoseo region-based clans have a great influence on the political world of the capital as a de facto power. The Gyeonggi region has the tombs of the loyal family and the ruling class as a hinterland of power. The Gyeonggi region-based clans enter the political world of the capital and the Gyeonggi region serves as a hinterland of power. In the late of Joseon Dynasty, as the Noron faction takes power since King Yeongjo, Seoin clans as a major faction of Noron faction increasingly acquire the ownership of tombs, agricultural land and villas.
