Without our full awareness, there are robots being used all around us. These robots are mostly results of engineering products and there are still lack of participation from designers. In contrast with other product designs, the forms of robot designs mostly appear as locomotion figures. This is because one of the main characteristics of a robot is that it performs each of its functions from actual movements. The locomotion figure of robots is the utmost important factors to consider first for robot design and by selecting locomotion figure the other design factors are determined.
The background for a study on the module-structured robot designs was to utilize the advantages of module-structures in a locomotion robots. The module-structured robots have advantages of ease in development of a new design through combining modules and of possibility of developing separate modules in a single platform. In addition, in case one of the module is damaged, an efficient exchange of the same module can be made. And it has characteristics of various functions being able to be carried out by changing the combination. This study proposes designs of module-structured robots that enables various forms as a result of different combination of modules and different locomotion methods.
For module-structure robot designs, the robot locomotion methods were analyzed depending on functional base and the important components of the existing module-structured robots were derived. Out of those factors, the study focused on locomotion forms of robots and joint movement forms. In order to select the module-structured robots as the basic form, a notion of the module tree structure was proposed. Through the module tree structure, the connection methods between modules were derived and this was used to select the basic form for module-structured robots.
Through the proposal of design process of module-structured robots, the important components for the development of the module-structured robots were selected. As a result, three types of forms for module-structured robot designs were proposed and it was confirmed that the module-structured robot designs can be completed by applying components of module-structured robots selected in the main body of this study.
In this study, through module-structured robot design, the components of module-structured robot design and the design process involved in module-structured robots were inspected. Going forward, by utilizing the design process involved in module-structured robots, more structured robot designs can be developed. In addition, this study confirms the possibilities of extending the boundaries set by robot designers from externality-focused design and hence to exhibit the capabilities of robot designers by setting movements between locomotion forms of robots and modules as well as by establishing module tree structure.
