This paper is the study about the production process of 35mm short film, "a Modern, Dong-Won Bang".
I have put an alarm in the freezer before in regard to its power to freeze everything in the hope that it would do the same to time
The alarm stayed in the freezer for a day did not work out that way, however. The second hand of the alarm taken out had been moving as usual and it was ticking more clearly than ever. The only thing different was that a bit of ice glued to the alarm and frost covered the surface of it made the ticking second hand look blurry.
There would be no person who might say that the actual time had stopped if the alarm stops working for being put in the freezer for quite a while as this only signals the technical breakdown of it.
Time can't stop itself and actually it hasn't. Furthermore, we, as living in this modern society, can't help admitting this fact. In addition, we might be unaware of this as we are controlled by this enormous being, "time".
This type of phenomenon might be more obvious to the moderns living a daily repetitive life. The focal point of this essay falls on those depressed modern people who are controlled in accordance with the regular and periodic order stipulated by enormous reality and who habituate themselves to this controlled movement as their own order.
From my perspective, the repetitiveness of the moderns living a daily life without the consciousness of their own identity might repeat their resistant behaviour to stop time by putting the alarm in the freezer and at last put forward such a behavior as a unconscious habit.
Therefore, this is why I would like to demonstrate this type of unconscious repetitiveness of the moderns through this short film.
A typical feature of a modern person was needed to show the unconsciously repetitive life on a segment basis. It would be more suitable to show the typical occurrence from the personal space after coming home from work rather than to do the social life occurrence at work in order to express his/her repetitiveness and isolation. So the main actor coming home after work was featured as a bit silly manner in a way like a mannequin who is labelled as a modern person on the forehead in regard to putting the alarm in the freezer.
As ordinary routines of the moderns was represented, the main actor finished his day putting this cellular phone from the vibration mode to the sound, surfing the internet, watching TV and reading "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People".
I let main actor was close a door in order to show what he gets the daily behavior of the moderns actually rolling inside the room, and let a timer of a fan stop in a living room as soon as the main actor put his phon from the vibration mode to the sound in his room. Also the sound of the second hand of the alarm in the freezer let go off from that moment.
I wanted to show the time passes quickly without the main actor's consciousness by means of overlapping the alarm in the freezer with swift breath among those moments when he does his routines with internet, TV and the book. I also wanted to give the impression as if the time actually controls his daily life by putting the sound of the second hand of the alarm between cuts with regard to transfer of all the cuts for the behavior inside the room.
Regarding the starting point when the main actor does each behavior inside the room, it was framed in as if riding on DOLLY. Also I made the moment as if each behavior occurs at an independent space. However, at the last scene where the entire appearance of the room is shown, all the behavior actually was done inside a tiny room by letting the main actor move back and forth sitting in a chair on a wheel like a robot between a computer and a TV which are placed close together. Besides, the exaggeration of the main actor like a robot was mainly intended as if he was controlled by the alarm.
At the scene in the following morning, I made the freezer door look dreamy but dreadful as it was opened all of a sudden with the sound of the alarm gone off in the freezer, and also focused on the moment when it suddenly became winter in a day when the main actor wakes up in the morning by also showing the way he stands up somehow meaningfully surrounded by the fan and the morning chill. There was also a bit of smoky twist by comparing the backside of the main actor meaningfully pictured before with his silly reaction getting back to his room immediately shivering with the cold without any consciousness despite looking at the snowstormy winter at the next scene.
Unpleasant snowstormy winter was set up to strengthen the image of winter, and the fan same as yesterday and the main actor going to work humming carols with winter coat on were to maximize the daily repetitiveness without consciousness.
At the last scene, the alarm was placed at the originally same place for the cycleable association with the inserted moment when water is streaming down the surface of it, and the surface with the ice on to a certain extent had the ice gradually melt down. This cycleable moment is to show his daily routine without his consciousness. This is also the reason why the ending part goes back to the first scene again.
