This study examines the small pottery bottles produced in Unified Silla from various perspectives, by investigating the evidence of their production and dissemination in terms of their usage, origin, and excavation history.
Previous studies have focused on identifying the age of these small pottery bottles on the basis of their shape, aperture, and chronological data. This has led to a rather vague estimate of the period in which they were produced, and as a result they have been regarded as iconic relics either of the Unified Silla or the late Silla-early Corea period. This study attempts to clearly estimate the period in which the small pottery bottles were produced by firstly identifying the relics excavated throughout the whole country, and then by examining the types and patterns of Inhwamun pottery excavated at the same sites. In order to categorize their uses, this study classifies small pottery bottles as either tomb vessels or practical vessels, whereas previous studies have simply regarded them as vessels for perfume and hair oil. Based on historical changes in the tomb system and on archaeological data, this study has found that there were similarities between the tomb vessels of Silla and of Unified Silla. Practical vessels produced in the middle of the 8th century have been excavated all over the country. On the basis of the records contained in the History of the Three Kingdoms (Samguksagi) and the spread of the belief in the Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) from the 8th to the 9th century, these vessels are assessed to have been used for medicinal oil, exorcism oil, thin rice gruel, or various liquids. This analysis is based on the social situation at the time of their production, which makes the argument of this study distinct from that of previous studies.
It has been reported that round bottles of the period were influenced by Chinese porcelain, but on the whole the origins of small pottery bottles have not been studied in detail to this point. In order to examine these origins, this study schematizes these pottery as round bottles, bottles with added thin bands, flat bottles, and abacus bead-shaped flat bottles. It assesses that round bottles without a flat bottom were influenced by the shape of the Dark Brown Oil Bottle and the Black Oil Bottle which were introduced through exchanges with the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Round bottles with a flat bottom are assessed to have been influenced by the small bottles that were introduced through exchanges with the Sui and Tang Dynasties, as they have been excavated from ancient tombs constructed in the late 6th century in Gujam-ri, Sangju, and their shape is similar to that of the small bottles of the Tang Dynasty. Bottles with added thin bands are assessed to have been influenced by the Glass Bottle produced in the Sasanian Empire (Persia) around the middle of the 8th century based on their similar types, shapes, sizes, and patterns. Flat bottles are assessed to have been influenced by the small bottles that were introduced through exchanges with the Northern Qi and Sui Dynasties. Abacus bead-shaped flat bottles, which are estimated to have been produced after the 9th century, are assessed to have been influenced by bronzeware of the period, based on the similarity of their shape with that of the Bronze Flat Bottle excavated at the Mireuksa Temple Site in Iksan.
A total of 64 sites where small pottery bottles were found were examined, and the excavation status of everyday life, mountain fortress, tomb, and temple artefacts are identified by region. In addition, this study attempts to estimate the production period of small pottery bottles by examining the types and patterns on Inhwamun pottery excavated at the same sites. It finds that there was diversity in the types and patterns of small pottery bottles. Based on this, they are classified as round bottles (type I), bottles with added thin bands and bottles with engraved lines (type II), flat bottles (type III), and abacus bead-shaped flat bottles (type IV). Type I is subdivided into types I-1 and I-2 depending on the presence or absence of a flat bottom, and type II is subdivided into types II-1 through II-6, depending on the pattern involved.
The excavated small pottery bottles of Unified Silla are categorized into types I and III and types II and IV, which are classified as originating in period I (late 7th century – mid-8th century) and period II (mid-8th century – late 10th century), respectively. In addition, it is assessed that in period I, small bottles produced in the Gyeongsang region were disseminated through advanced modes of transportation to meet the demand of those who had migrated from Wanggyeong to various provinces. It is also argued that in period II, small bottles began to spread throughout the country due to the prevalence of private trade in the late 8th century and the 9th century. Type II bottles, which have been the most frequently excavated artefacts all over the country, are classified in terms of six types depending on their pattern, and this study finds that a large number of types II-4, II-5, and II-6 pottery, which are estimated to have been produced in the late 8th century and the 9th century, were excavated throughout the country.
Since production sites of these pottery subsequent to the first half of the 10th century have not been identified, it is inferred that small pottery bottles were produced only until the first half of that century. They were excavated along with inscription roof tiles dating from the late 10th century from the Mangisanseong Fortress and the Bongeopsa Temple Site in Anseong and the Gyesan-ri in Yeongdong, and also from ancient tombs in Hwangyong-ri in Sejong, which is estimated to have been built before the latter half of the 10th century. On this basis, it is inferred that these pottery were used until the late 10th century.
This study clarifies the overall chronology of small pottery bottles in Unified Silla, whose period of production have been rather vaguely estimated to this point. It also helps us to better understand the origins and usage of small pottery bottles as a whole, which have not heretofore been studied in detail. This study will be helpful in furthering research into the small pottery bottles of Unified Silla from various perspectives.
