Eutectic alloys having typical lamellar structure have a great advantage to enhance the strength of the samples due to the regular lamination of soft and hard phases based on a concept of rule of a mixture and the increase of the volume fraction of the phase interfaces often playing an important role to hinder dislocation slip during deformation. However, there is a critical drawback of these eutectic alloys i.e. a gradual decreas of the plasticity with increasing the strength of the sample.
In order to overcome such critical disadvantage of the eutectic alloys, the recent development of ultrafine eutectic composites containing micron-scale dendrites as toughening phase in th ultrafine lamellar structure has been highlighted. The detailed investigations on the microscopic deformation mechanisms of the ultrafine eutectic composites reveal that a mixture of the slip and shear deformation is possibly interacted together thus preventing the localization of the stress during deformation. Therefore, it was possible to consider that the length-scale and properties of the constituent phases so called structural heterogeneity are very important to control both strength and plasticity. Furthermore, the recent investigation on the effect of the additional elements in the ultrafine eutectic alloys comprising fully lamellar structure without any micron-scale toughening phase reveals that the length-scale heterogeneity in the lamellar structure is effective to enhance the plasticity by the rotation of the eutectic colony boundary. In addition, the systematic investigations of the microstructural and mechanical properties of a series of Ti-Fe-Sn and Mg-Cu-Zn bimodal ultrafine eutectic alloys composed of two lamellar structures with different constituent phases demonstrate that not only length-scale and properties of the constituent phases in the lamellar structure but also volume fraction and morphology of the colony structure are very important to prevent to concentration of the stress thus increasing the plasticity of the alloys. From these results, one can clearly understand that the length-scale, volume fraction and morphology of the lamellar and colony structure belong to the structural heterogeneity are indeed effective to control the mechanical properties of the eutectic alloys. However, unfortunately, there was no clear description on the effect of the chemical heterogeneity on the mechanical properties of the ultrafine eutectic alloys possibly due to the limited selection of the minor elements to cause only chemical heterogeneity in the eutectic alloys.
In this paper, we systematically investigate the influence of minor elements (Mg, Gd, Y, Pb and Bi) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Th70.5Fe29.5 eutectic alloys. These elements are chosen due to the immiscibility to Fe and Ti. Microstructural investigation reveals that foramtion of TiFe and β-Ti dendrite phases in eutectic structure matrix as Ti-Fe-Mg case. On the other hand, in the case of Ti-Fe-Gd and Ti-Fe-Y alloys, with increasing minor element contents primary phases form and lamellar spacing increases compared to that eutectic alloy. Investigation on mechanical properties reveals that the plasticity of Ti-Fe-Gd and Ti-Fe-Y alloys is gradually improved without a reduction of strength. These results suggest that the enhancement of the mechanical properties is closely related to the formation of primary phase. Ti-Fe-Pb and Ti-Fe-Bi eutectic structure alloys has been selected as a minor element due to asymmetrical solubility in β-Ti and TiFe phases. Thus, we believe that different amount of Pb and Bi added into the alloy can successfully create only chemical heterogeneity of the ultrafine eutectic structure and thus significantly improving the mechanical properties of the alloy. The detailed microstructural investigation clearly reveals that the Pb and Bi were highly saturated at the colony boundary of the ultrafine eutectic alloys. The chemical heterogeneity introduced by the additional minor elements in the present investigation effectively dissipates the localization of the stress thus improving the plasticity up to 8.5% without compromising the strength of 2100 MPa. Therefore, it is possible to propose that the chemical heterogeneity introduced by the suitable selection of the minor elements in the ultrafine eutectic alloys possibly give us a more effective way to improve the mechanical properties of the eutectic alloys rather than structural heterogeneity.
