존 노이마이어의 「인어공주」 무용작품분석

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study analyzed the work based on Janet Adshead's dance analysis method, the mermaid of John Neumeier. The purpose of this project is to examine the characteristics of the work and its choreography.
To this end, the related prior research papers and books, dance articles, reviews and internet materials were collected and studied mainly in the literature. Also, it referred to DVD video materials performed by the San Francisco Ballet in 2011.
The conclusion of the work analysis through the above research methods is as follows.
First, in dancers' movements, the expression of a heterogeneous ensemble, with different but harmonious composition, manifested in classical ballet's formality and modernity of modern dance and daily and realistic movements, and in the movements between reality and reality. The use of pantomime and gestures also created naturalness in every scene and highlighted dramatic elements. And unique and grotesque makeup, costumes, and intense facial expressions expressed by the main dancers represent the choreographer's own abstract grotesque expressions.
Second, the theme and situation of the work were hinted at in a clearer and more realistic way with the minimal stage production, neon signs expressing the seafloor and the waves, costumes and makeup of the unique dancers, and various props. Also, the production of" drama" shows Andersen's inner workings, or the poet's complicated inner psychology. This format has the advantage of making it easier to understand the choreographer's intentions and works. And the use of props shows the symbolism of the development of the work. John Neumeier is using Sora as a medium for connecting the sea world and the human world, a symbol that adds new value to an object or action and gives it another meaning.
Third, the creation of a new character that is not in the original book shows John Neumeier's choreography-oriented originality. This can also be seen as a human nature exploration, which is a characteristic of John Neumeier's work. John Neumeier's "The Little Mermaid" features the character "The Poet," which projects the life of writer Andersen, and shows Andersen's unfulfilled love through his creation, "The Mermaid," expressing his inner psychology. John Neumeier was very interested in Andersen's life, in which he reflected Andersen's sexuality in his work.
Fourth, Music is one of the most important elements of dance, and it can enhance the completeness of the work by harmonizing movement with proper performance or sound. In particular, John Neumeier delivers emotions to the audience by balancing the size of movement with the cross-sectional tones of violin and cello, while controlling and the mermaid's psychological expression. In addition to music, the prologue shows the vividness of the work by inserting the sound of waves and laughter, the sound of chanting in Chapter 2 of the conversation, and the sound of a whistle.
The analysis of John Neumeier's work resulted in the characteristics of such works, and it was evident that his works were marked by realistic and straightforward grotesque expressions, human exploration, and expressionist tendencies that emphasized dramatic elements.
Through this, I hope that it will serve as a research case in examining the various choreography trends in modern ballet, and furthermore, it will be of some useful help to research the analysis of works that appreciate, understand, interpret, and evaluate dance. It is also hoped that you will study the styles of famous choreographers from abroad, such as John Neumeier, to create a new modern ballet work that inspires the development of Korean creative ballet and can be recognized globally.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 존 노이마이어의「인어공주」를 자넷 에드쉐드 무용분석법을 기반으로 작품을 분석하였다. 이를 통해 나타나는 작품적 특징과 안무성향을 고찰하는데 목적이 있다.
이를 위해 그와 관련된 선행연구 논문과 서적, 무용 기사와 평론, 인터넷 자료를 수집하여 문헌을 중심으로 연구하였다. 또한 2011년 샌프란 시스코발레단에 의해 공연된 DVD 영상자료를 참고하였다.
위의 연구방법을 통한 작품분석의 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 무용수들의 움직임에서 고전발레의 형식미와 현대무용의 모던함과 일상적이고 사실적인 움직임, 그리고 현실과 비현실 사이의 움직임에서 나타나는 서로 다르지만 조화로운 구성으로 이질적인 앙상블의 표현을 보여준다. 또한 팬토마임과 제스처의 사용으로 모든 장면에서 자연스러움을 연출하였고 극적인 요소를 부각시켰다. 그리고 독특하고 괴기한 분장과 의상, 주요 무용수들이 표현하는 강렬한 표정 연기가 안무가만의 추상화된 그로테스크적 표현들을 나타내고 있다.
둘째, 각 장에 나타나는 미니멀한 무대연출과 해저와 출렁이는 파도를 표현하는 네온사인, 개성있는 무용수들의 의상과 분장 그리고 다양한 소품들로 작품의 주제와 상황을 암시하여 작품의 내용을 더욱 선명하고 현실감 있게 연출하였다. 또한 ‘극중극’ 형식의 연출로 안데르센의 내면 즉, 시인의 복잡한 내면 심리를 표출해 내고 있다. 이 형식은 안무가의 의도와 작품을 보다 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 이점이 있다. 그리고 소품의 활용으로 작품 전개의 상징성을 보여주고 있다. 존 노이마이어는 바다세계와 인간세계를 연결하는 매개체 역할로 소라를 활용하고 있는데 상징은 어떤 대상이나 행동에 새로운 가치를 더해주고 또 다른 의미를 부여해주는 것이다.
셋째, 원작에는 없는 새로운 캐릭터를 탄생시킨 것을 볼 때 존 노이마이어의 안무성향의 독창성을 알 수 있다. 이것은 그의 작품적 특징이라고 할 수 있는 인간성 탐구로도 볼 수 있다. 존 노이마이어의 「인어공주」에는 작가 안데르센의 삶을 투영한 인물 ‘시인’이 등장하고 그의 창조물인 ‘인어’를 통해서 안데르센의 못 이룬 사랑을 보여주며 그의 내면 심리를 표출시키고 있다. 존 노이마이어는 안데르센의 삶에 관심이 많았는데 그 안에서 그는 안데르센의 섹슈얼리티를 자신의 작품에 반영한 것이다.
넷째, 무용에 있어서 음악은 가장 중요한 요소 중 하나로 적절한 연주 또는 소리와 함께 움직임이 조화를 이루면서 작품의 완성도를 높일 수 있다. 존 노이마이어는 특히 시인과 인어의 심리표현을 바이올린과 첼로의 단면적인 음색을 가지고 움직임의 크기를 조절하면서 강·약, 크고 작음의 밸런스를 이루어 관객에게 감정을 전달한다. 또한 음악 이외에 프롤로그에서 파도 소리와 웃음소리, 대화 소리 2장에서의 기합 소리, 호루라기 소리 등을 삽입하여 작품의 생생함을 나타내고 있다.
존 노이마이어의 작품을 분석한 결과 이와 같은 작품의 특징을 도출하였고, 그의 작품에서는 사실적이고 직설적인 그로테스크적 표현과 인간 탐구, 그리고 극적인 요소를 강조하는 표현주의적 성향이 두드러지게 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
이를 통해 현대발레에 나타나고 있는 다양한 안무성향들을 고찰하는데 있어서 하나의 연구사례가 되길 바라고, 나아가 무용을 감상하고 이해하며 해석·평가하는 작품분석 연구에 조금이나마 유익한 도움이 되길 기대한다. 또한 존 노이마이어와 같은 해외 유명 안무가들의 스타일을 연구하여 한국 창작 발레의 발전에 영감을 주고 세계적으로 인정받을 수 있는 새로운 현대발레작품을 창작하길 바란다.
