The Effect of Positive Behavior Support
on Teachers and Children with and without Delayed Development in the Inclusive Education Settings
Kyung Yoon, Kim
Dept. of Child Psychology and Education
The Graduate School of
Sungkyunkwan University
With a view to assessing the success and adoptability of inclusive education for intervening behavioral problems in children with typical development, this study explored the effects of positive behavior support (PBS), a powerful "interventional" approach, on teachers and children with and without delayed development in the inclusive education settings, using the multiple baseline design across subjects.
We investigated the effects of PBS in the inclusive settings on the level of instructional intervention of instructors and the consequent changes in behavioral problems of children with delayed development and in the perception of children with typical development about those with delayed development in same class by coaching PBS instructional strategies to the teachers . For this purpose, we selected three public, inclusive child care and education centers, those with initials of U, M and D, located in the same district in Seoul. The former two served as the experimental group, while the latter, the control group. Three delayed development children (aged 3, 4 and 5) who strongly needed instructional intervention for their behavioral problems were selected from the experimental group, at U and M. PBS training was offered to each instructor particularly assigned to each children. We observed the changes both in the level of instructional intervention from instructors and in the frequency of problem and engagement behaviors of children with delayed development. To examine the perception of general children about ones with developmental delay, peer acceptance tests were delivered to 42 children, each from both experimental and control groups before and after the implementation of PBS.
The results showed an increased level of instructional intervention from PBS-trained instructors and a decreased rate of problem behaviors while a greater increased rate of engagement behaviors from delayed developmental children. Statistically significant relations were found between instructional intervention and behaviors of children with developmental delay: a negative relation between instructional intervention and problem behaviors and a positive relation between instructional intervention and engagement ones. In sum, the greater instructional intervention instructors provided, the fewer behavioral problems and the more engagement behaviors, the developmentally delayed children showed.
Peer acceptance tests exhibited that there was a gap between the perception of general children in experimental group and their counterparts in control group, regarding those with delayed development. Experimental group with the intervention of PBS showed the improved perception about those with developmental delay, while control group, a somewhat worse than before.
Although this study found that PBS was an effective intervention approach and proved close relations between instructional intervention and problem/engagement behaviors of children with delayed development, it had limitations of the sample - small sample size, exclusion of general children and their instructors - and the ignored factors including the roles of home.
Based in these, the implementation of interventional instruction for general children with challenging behaviors, the class and school-wide PBS implementation, the support system building for instructors assigned for developmentally delayed children, the collaboration system organization between general and special instructors, and the further investigation for effects of association between educational setting and family were suggested.
