The purpose of this study was to examine the actual leisure time of rural high school students, their perception of leisure activities and their experience in leisure education, to identify what problems their leisure lives were faced with, and ultimately to help steer their leisure activities in the right direction.
The subjects in this study were 400 boys and girls who attended five different high schools in rural communities in Gengweon province. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 11.5 program. To figure out the general characteristics of the respondents, statistical data on frequency and percentage were acquired, and x2(Chi-square) test, t-test, F-test and frequency analysis were employed to see if their demographic characteristics made any significant differences to their real leisure time, leisure type, leisure consciousness and leisure-education experience.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the rural high school students were significantly different from one another in real weekday leisure time according to their academic field of study, gender, academic achievement and part-time job experience. The students who were free for one or two hours made up the largest group(29.5%). Many of those who attended regular high school, who were girls and whose achievement was lower were free for less than one to two hours on weekdays. Their Saturday leisure time significantly varied with their academic field of study and monthly allowances. The largest number of the students(41.8%) were free for five hours or more on Saturdays. Their academic field of study and part-time job experience made a significant difference to their Sunday leisure time. The greatest group of the students(57.3%) was free for five or more hours on Sundays.
Second, their weekday leisure activities were significantly different according to their academic field of study, gender, commuting distance and part-time job experience. Intellectual activities(34.3%) were most dominant on weekdays. Their Saturday leisure activities differed significantly with their academic field of study, gender and part-time job experience, and entertainment activities(34.85) were most common on Saturdays. The leisure activities they did on Sundays and other holidays varied significantly with their part-time job experience, and entertain- ment activities(35.0%) were most prevailing on these days. Among their demographic characteristics including gender, entertainment activities were common among the boys(38.8%), and many of the girls were engaged in intellectual activities(42.6%). By part-time job experience, the experienced students did a lot of social activities(25.0%), and intellectual activities were prevailing among the students with no part-time job experience(44.0%).
Third, their leisure activity period significantly varied with their commuting distance. The largest percentage of them spent less than one month doing a particular type of leisure activity. Their vacation leisure time was significantly different according to their academic field of study, gender and academic achievement, and hobby activities were most widespread on vacation. People with whom they shared leisure activities were significantly different according to their monthly allowances and part-time job experience. The largest group of them shared leisure activities with their friends.
Fourth, their allowances for leisure life significantly differed with their gender, academic achievement, commuting distance and part-time job experience. Less than 20 thousand won was most common, and they spent the most money eating between meals. They spent time with their friends mostly in Internet cafes, and the most dominant theme of conservation was their studies and career. The largest number of them read one or two books every year.
Fifth, their part-time job experience was significantly different according to their academic field of study, academic achievement and commuting distance. The experienced students(58%) outnumbered the others who had no experience. Many of the experienced boys delivered food, and a lot of the experienced girls served at restaurants.
Fifth, the reason why they were in want of leisure activities was significantly different according to their monthly allowances. Many needed leisure activities for a change. As for the usefulness of leisure activities, those who were girls and whose grades were lower thought that these activities made them feel refreshed. Their satisfaction with leisure activities were a little above the average, and the business high school students were more satisfied than the regular high schoolers. Regarding the reason why leisure activities were unsatisfactory, the largest number of them(24.7%) cited time constraints and a shortage of leisure facilities, and the second most frequent reason(21.9%) was a lack of money. As to the understanding of their parents about leisure activities, the greatest group(33.0%) found their parents to be a little understanding, and 7.3 percent didn't consider their parents to understand them.
Seventh, as for what sort of leisure activities they wanted to do, the girls and students with no part-time job experience hoped to listen to music or to see plays or movies. Concerning what type of youth leisure facilities should be expanded, cultural facilities were prized by those who attended regular high school, who were girls and whose monthly allowances were less than 20 to 40 thousand won. As to what type of leisure facilities should be installed in their local communities, youth cafes were pointed out by the students who attended regular high school, who were girls and who had part-time job experience.
Eighth, in regard to what should be done to improve the leisure activities of adolescents, the expansion of leisure facilities and spaces was accentuated by those who attended business high school, who were girls, whose academic achievement was at an intermediate level and who had part-time job experience. Concerning leisure-guidance experience, most of them had no experience to learn about leisure. Teachers(46.7%) were identified as those who provided leisure guidance the most, followed by parents and siblings(25.0%). As to what should be done by society, the expansion of leisure facilities(58.0%) was most stressed. Those who attended business high school and whose academic achievement was at an intermediate and low level emphasized it significantly more than the others who attended regular high school and whose academic achievement was good. The second most stressed one was an improvement of college entrance system(22.8%). Those who attended regular high school, who were girls, whose academic achievement was at a high and intermediate level and who had no part-time job experience put significantly more stress on it than the others who attended business high school, who were boys, whose academic achievement was poor and who had part-time job experience.
