This research investigates the original location of enshrinement of the Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva sculpture produced by the monk-painter Uigyeom at Unheungsa Temple in Goseong in 1730 but which is currently housed at Naewonjeongsa Temple in Busan. It examines the location in relation to the statue’s production background and to White-Robed Avalokiteśvara faith.
Considering its imposing physique, royal ease position, and the skirt covering the pedestal, the Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva of Naewonjeongsa Temple is presumed to have been produced as a stand-alone image rather than as an attending figure for another Buddha. Moreover, the painting of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva produced as a part of a project in 1730 at Unheungsa Temple is believed to have been intended to be hung behind the Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. The Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva depicted in the painting wears a heavenly garment and has its legs crossed, while the Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva sculpture wears a large monastic robe and sits in the royal ease posture. This difference between the Bodhisattva sculpture in front and Bodhisattva painting to the rear can be commonly seen in versions produced after the eighteenth centuries. However, the Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva by Uigyeom is one of the earliest examples.
During the Buddhist project of 1730 at Unheungsa Temple in Goseong, the Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, the paintings for a large-scale hanging scroll, Buddhas of Three Ages, Nectar Ritual, Three Bodhisattvas, and Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva were all produced. The creation of this sculpture and paintings indicates that a large-scale reconstruction took place at the temple. They were fashioned and enshrined according to a series of deliberate plans. The Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva sculpture appears to have been originally designed to be enshrined in a Buddhist hall. This sculpture is thought to have been intended for Daeungjeon Hall, the main Buddhist hall of the time, since the Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva painting bears an inscription indicating that it was enshrined in the main Buddha Hall and in the records on the establishment and reconstruction of Unheungsa do not mention any Avalokiteśvara Hall or Wontongjeon Hall.
Furthermore, since the Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva sculpture is a single image of a White-robed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, it illuminates details of the faith in the White-robed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and of related rituals from the late Joseon period. Starting in the early Joseon period, the ritual of paying homage and offering repentance to White-robed Avalokiteśvara was performed to atone for misdeeds and pray for rebirth in the pure land. During the late Joseon period, it began to incorporate the ritual proceedings of the Celebration of the Buddha’s sermon at Vulture Peak and the ritual of paying homage and repentance to White-robed Avalokiteśvara came to gain additional functions as a memorial service for the repose of the deceased and the appeasement of their souls. Accordingly, this Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva sculpted in the late Joseon period is presumed to have functioned as a medium for the repose of the deceased within Daeungjeon Hall. This function of the Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva is also related to the lack of a depiction of the White-robed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva who played this role in the Nectar Ritual Painting produced in 1730 at Unheungsa. Since both the sculpture of Wooden Seated Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and the Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva painting hung behind it depict White-robed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, the repeated iconography is believed to have been excluded in the Nectar Ritual Painting created for the appeasement of the souls of the deceased.
