This study examines the compositions and iconographical characteristics of different Tang and
Song Dynasty transformation tableaux of the Visualization Sutra (觀無量壽經), accompanied by
educational interpretations. Its aim was to determine the origins and identity of Goryeo Visualization
Sutra transformation tableaux through the study of issues of Chinese regional characteristics.
Visualization Sutra transformation tableaux prevalent during the Tang Dynasty were created under
the influence of Seon Buddhist doctrinal interpretation, which was highly influential in areas such as
Shaanxi, Shanxi and Henan provinces. In Seon Buddhism visualizations 1~13 of the Visualization
Sutra, known as “contemplations,” are said to have been created at the request of Queen Vaidehi.
Perhaps because of this, Vaidehi appears in contemplation in each visualization in Tang Dynasty Visualization
Sutra transformation tableaux. Visualisations 14~16, by contrast, describe the nine levels
of rebirth into the Pure Land and show Shakyamuni preaching for the benefit of the general public,
not at Vaidehi’s request. Therefore, the queen is not depicted in these visualizations. Instead, they
show those in the lowest grades of rebirth following Amitabha and being reborn in paradise despite
having descended into hell, reflecting the Seon Pure Land beliefs.
Song Dynasty Visualization Sutra transformation tableaux differ considerably from those of
Tang in terms of both composition and iconography. While those of Tang are positioned around the
Amitabha Pure Land tableau, those of Song are separated from the Amitabha Pure Land transformation
tableau and produced as independent Buddha paintings. The introductory section and 16
visualizations of the Visualization Sutra, too, are divided and painted as two pictures, or rendered
with the introductory section strongly diminished and the 16 visualizations emphasized. When it
comes to the depiction of the 16 visualizations, too, scenes from the nine classes of rebirth in the
Pure Land are painted larger and located more centrally than those of the 13 visualizations, placing the focus not on the process of rebirth in the Pure Land but on scenes of listening to preaching in the
Pure Land after rebirth. I believe this depiction reveals an interest in attaining Buddhahood through
religious practice after Pure Land rebirth, in contrast to Seon Pure Land belief, which was interested
principally in rebirth in paradise itself.
Though it is not possible to specify the precise time when the Song forms of transformation
tableaux of the sixteen visualizations of the Visualization Sutra were introduced to Goryeo, they
are presumed to have been transmitted around the 12th or 13th century via Ningbo, the city used
by both states as their official trading port. After inheriting Song styles, the transformation tableaux
of late Goryeo showed a further stage of evolution, taking apart and reconstituting compositions,
as seen in examples now housed in Saifukuji, Otakaji, Chionin and Rishoji temples in Japan. The
Saifukuji and Otakaji paintings maintain the Song sixteen visualization transformation tableaux
form while demonstrating the Pure Land ideas of Goryeo in details such as the layout of scenes
from the nine classes of rebirth in the Pure Land and in their depiction of the reborn as bodhisattvas
in scenes of prophecies of attaining Buddhahood. In the Chionin painting, by contrast, visualizations
1~7 visualizing paradise and scenes from the nine classes of rebirth in the Pure Land are placed
in the upper and lower parts of the work and rendered in a small size, while visualizations of Amitabha
and bodhisattvas, corresponding to numbers 8~13, are depicted in a larger size and afforded
a central position. This demonstrates the Goryeo concept of trying to perceiving Amitabha through
mental and spiritual practice. The reborn souls that appear to represent the actual individuals who
commissioned the painting are depicted in visualization 12, testifying to the strong desire for Pure
Land rebirth among those in Goryeo who sponsored the production of Buddhist paintings.
