In this study, by paying attention to the ending of “Shim-Cheong-Ga,” in which Shim-Cheong becomes an empress and her blind father opens his eyes, the story can be interpreted as the narration of suppression and the liberation of familism beyond good luck as a reward for extreme filial piety. Based on a version of Yeon-Soo Kim that clearly brought antinomic paradox to light in the filial piety of Shim-Cheong, the liberated way of familism being implemented by success and the mercy of Shim-Cheong is observed by identifying the limits of distorted familism demanding personal sacrifice.
In Chapter 2, based on the realistic hardship borne by Shim-Cheong, the pain being aggravated by extreme poverty, and the desire of Shim-Bong-Sa, who wishes to open his eyes, is observed. In particular, in the line of Jang-Seung-Sang Bu-In, an image of Shim-Cheong, who is exposed human agony while pursuing filial piety, can be found. Through this, it is found that the agony of Shim-Cheong presents an agonizing concern between a sense of burden for her father and personal autonomy and a conflict between family (a group) and individual pursuit of happiness. In this respect, in the case of the agony of Shim-Cheong, family features being concentrated on patriarchy and the sacrificing of desires by female members are closely related to unique Korean familism. That is, it is close to the prototype of the Korean-type familism that praises personal sacrifice as the “responsibility and duty” or “lofty virtue” for the happiness of a group.
In Chapter 3, a clue for overcoming agony is given through surrounding characters who show sympathy and offer condolences for the suffering of Shim-Cheong. The voluntary sacrifice of Shim-Cheong is applicable to officially recognized violence by the desire of the patriarch and the group (seamen). The agony of Shim-Cheong is not directly exposed through the mouth of Shim-Cheong, but it can be found that after the death of Shim-Cheong, through the public response to the death, her suffering is extended from a person to multiple people. The agony of Shim-Cheong leads to sympathy from multiple people, including the voices of virtuous woman—the victims of Confucian ideology through the condolences of Jang-Seung-Sang Bu-In remembering Mang-Sa-Dae and Ta-Ru-Bi and the reflection of seamen. These scenes may be said to be a public memory that remembers and reflects the sacrifice and solidarity being shared with the agony of Shim-Cheong. These narrative scenes signify that her realistic suffering was difficult for her to deal with by herself.
In Chapter 4, a liberation clue for Korean-type familism demanding personal sacrifice for preserving family dignity is found. Its main point can be found in a happy ending in which Shim-Cheong becomes an empress under extreme poverty through the process of death and resurrection and the blind Shim opens his eyes through a feast for the blind, and all the blind people open their eyes together. In this ending, the “state role” protecting the people is emphasized, and it is likely to be interpreted as defiance against distorted familism (or nationalism) that entirely passes the buck of realistic problems to personal concerns while concealing state roles. The mercy of Shim-Cheong, who becomes an empress, is said to be the wisdom and philosophy of the classic that discovers the state role in the problems that are difficult to deal with by Shim-cheong alone, such as extreme sustained poverty due to the absence of her mother and suppressed desire of her blind father, who is ruined by Sadaebu.
It is clear that the basic framework of Shim-Cheong story is “extreme filial piety and rewarding good luck.” However, the narrative elements attached thereto involve expectations of defiance (resistance) and liberation for distorted ideology as well. In this respect, the significance of extension to multiple solidarity or official memory surrounding the suffering of Shim-che...
